The International Module Teacher Education introduces students to global citizenship in education. This 3 ECTS course blends online collaboration with a 5‑day on‑site week at the University of Groningen, culminating in a reflective assignment.
About the course
Content
The course starts with (1) an online pre-programme in which students are introduced to Global Citizenship in education. Subsequently, students from the same university engage in online group discussions about global citizenship challenges their educational system faces. They work out a group video about the educational system in their region and the challenges they face regarding global citizenship.
In a (2) second phase, students physically come together at the University of Groningen (13-17 April, 2026) and follow a 5-day on-site programme with a social and academic focus. During these 5 days, students gain insight into the concept of Global Citizenship through the method of Challenge-based education. Concretely, students participate in group assignments and workshops, attend guest lectures on Global Citizenship, participate in a socio-cultural activity, and a school-visit that currently faces (and tackles) issues in the field of Global Citizenship.
In a (3) third phase, students write a short reflection report of about 2 pages, reflecting on what they have learned during their 5-day on-site stay at the University of Groningen.
Learning outcomes
After the course, students will be able to:
- Acquire and share interdisciplinary knowledge on global and European citizenship using CBL methodologies.
- Identify regional and national challenges related to citizenship education.
- Critically engage with relevant theories and research.
- Reflect on their future teaching roles in preparing pupils for global citizenship.
