ENLIGHT Lecture: „Migration & Climate Change”, March 9, 6 pm CET

On March 9th at 6pm, the next ENLIGHT Lecture will be hosted and livestreamed online. The fifth session of this semesters’ ENLIGHT Lecture series explores connection the connection between Climate Change and Migration as a growing number of natural disasters, extreme heat and drought will turn climate change into the most common cause of forced migration within the 21st century.

In this lecture, four scientists of the ENLIGHT universities will give short presentations on their current projects and findings on impeding humanitarian crisis due to climate change.  Els Bekaert from Ghent University, a PhD Fellow with UNU-CRIS label, will talk about her study on the health impacts of climate change and the role of healthcare in Sub-Saharan Africa. Su-Ming Khoo, a lecturer for Political Science at NUI Galway, will present the topic: “Climate crisis as a human crisis – facing inhumanity with ethical creativity”. In another presentation,  Inmaculada Martinez-Zarzoso, Professor for Development Economics at the University of Göttingen, will talk about “Climate change, natural disasters and international migration: A country level analysis”. Ashok Swain, Professor for Peace and Conflict Studies at Uppsala University, will discuss the question how “Climate migration and Conflict” are interconnected.

Networking event after the lecture for researchers from ENLIGHT universities

Each lecture is followed by a networking event for researchers from ENLIGHT universities. They can not only continue the discussion on the lecture`s topic but also use the opportunity to identify common research interests. This event serves as a platform for developing new ideas for future cooperation within the network. The ENLIGHT team supports this process by providing insights on funding opportunities. Researchers from all stages are more than welcome to join in! Please register here until March 9.

The ENLIGHT lecture series takes place each semester and represents one of the flagship domains which are key determinants of societal well-being and sustainability. For our ENLIGHT lectures, scientists, and researchers from across the ENLIGHT network come together to discuss different perspectives on and approaches to combat climate change. The topics in this fall's lecture series range from food & sustainability to the impact of climate change on migration.
