ENLIGHT Lecture 'SARS-CoV-2: New virus, new detection protocols' (1 July 2020)

With Tomas Szemes and Amanda Sierra, two renowned scientists from our partner institutions Comenius University Bratislava (Slovakia) and University of the Basque Country (Spain), we have shed light on the development of fast, secure and cheap SARS-CoV-2 detection protocols that allow the public health system the continuous screening of new infections in order to fight the current health crisis.
The lecture was hold online via Zoom and was combined with an online discussion forum, that left room for the questions and comments of the audience. Students, academics from all disciplines and the general public were likewise targeted.
Dr. Tomáš Szemes is a researcher and developer in the Department of Microbiology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Comenius University of Bratislava. He is an expert in the research field of Genomics which deals with the analysis of genomes. Genomes being the full genetic information of living organisms, such as viruses. His work is frequently published in specialist literature such as the ‘International Journal for Molecular Sciences’ or the ‘European Journal of Human Genetics’. He and his team helped to develop COVID-19 kits for diagnostic purposes, which are now used in routine testing.
Prof. Amanda Sierra, who received her PhD at the Complutense University of Madrid is a Research Professor at the ‘Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience’, where she heads the Glial Cell Biology Lab. Some of her research focuses on the controlling of the identity and function of microglia or brain macrophages. Prof Sierra already published and co-published over 60 studies that were publicised in prestigious specialist literature such as the Journal for Neurosciences. Dr. Daniel Marino is a scientist from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and Ikerbasque Foundation. He works in plant physiology and molecular biology in the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology of the UPV/EHU. His research is focused on studying the genetic basis of plants nutrient use efficiency in the context of reaching a more sustainable agriculture.
