Empathy, Humour, and Human Rights: Regional Academy of Comenius University Connects Learning with Real Life

How can humour heal, and how can understanding one’s rights empower? This October, the Regional Academy of Comenius University, part of the ENLIGHT university alliance, explored these themes through two engaging events — one focused on empathy in medicine, the other on civic awareness and rights protection.

The Work of the Public Defender of Rights

On 17 October 2025, the Regional Academy hosted a lecture on “The Work of the Public Defender of Rights” for students of the University of the Third Age in Bratislava. The lecture was delivered by Mgr. Tomáš Čitbaj, Director General at the Office of the Public Defender of Rights (Ombudsman’s Office) — a long-term external ENLIGHT partner.

Focusing on issues relevant to seniors, Čitbaj explained how the Ombudsman’s Office helps protect individuals from unfair treatment and discrimination. His talk inspired an open and lively discussion about real-life experiences and challenges.

“It’s encouraging to see that discussions about the protection of rights still inspire curiosity and civic awareness among seniors,” said Čitbaj.

Humour as a Communication Tool

 2025 CU Clowndoctors Martin

Just a few day before, onn 14 October 2025, students of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin took part in the workshop “Humour as a Communication Tool”, led by professional health clowns Pavel Mihaľák and Milan Chalmovský from ČERVENÝ NOS Clowndoctors.

Through playful and interactive activities, future doctors learned how humour can make communication with patients easier, reduce stress, and build trust. As Mihaľák explained:

“We make fun, we tease, we create laughter through unexpected situations – but always with respect for the dignity of our partner.”

Students appreciated the opportunity to practice these techniques in a safe environment and reflect on the responsible use of humour in healthcare. The workshop deepened collaboration between the university and ČERVENÝ NOS Clowndoctors, showing how empathy and playfulness can support medical professionalism.

Learning Through Empathy

Both events highlight the Regional Academy’s mission to connect education with practice and to engage diverse groups in meaningful learning. Whether through humour or dialogue about rights, these initiatives show that knowledge gains real value when it strengthens both competence and compassion.
