Call for Participation: Archaeologies of Sustainability Workshop at the University of Bern

Dates: 18-22 February 2026
Location: University of Bern, Switzerland

The ENLIGHT Thematic Network Archaeologies of Sustainable Environments (EASE) invites researchers to join the international workshop “Archaeologies of Sustainability: Long-term perspectives on food production, infrastructure, innovation and climate change.”

Founded by the universities of Uppsala, Groningen, and Bern, EASE aims to foster dialogue on how archaeology and related disciplines can contribute to sustainability research and practice. The network now seeks to expand to all ENLIGHT universities, creating opportunities for collaboration in research, teaching, and public outreach.

Workshop objectives

The workshop seeks to:

  • Create a scientific discussion of archaeological contributions to sustainability
  • Build a network among archaeology and related fields at ENLIGHT universities
  • Discuss future collaborations on research, teaching and public outreach within or beyond ENLIGHT

Who can participate?

The workshop is open to researchers from ENLIGHT universities working on sustainability-related questions in archaeology and neighbouring disciplines. Participation is possible with or without your own contribution:

  • With contribution (talk or poster):
    • Title submission deadline: 1 October 2025
    • Abstract (max. 300 words) deadline: December 2025
  • Without contribution:
    • Short Expression of Interest (EOI) deadline: October 2025

Accommodation costs will be covered for all participants who register before 1 October 2025.

Preliminary programme (subject to change)

  • Tuesday, 17 February 2026 – Arrival, keynote lecture, and icebreaker
  • Wednesday, 18 February 2026 – Scientific programme, workshop dinner
  • Thursday, 19 February 2026 – Scientific programme, departure
