Period: 2025-2027

ETHYC, led by the University of Galway in collaboration with four other ENLIGHT partners, namely the Universities of the Basque Country, Groningen, Ghent, and Bern, aims to establish a robust, multidisciplinary hydrogen education and training network. Building on existing hydrogen projects, courses, and regional complementary strengths, the project seeks to consolidate partnerships within the ETHYC consortium while engaging new partners from across the ENLIGHT alliance and beyond, including academia, industry, NGOs, civil society, and governmental bodies.

The project’s core objective is to enhance hydrogen-related education, training, and stakeholder integration across ENLIGHT institutions. It will create strong regional and transnational linkages among universities, policymakers, industry, and citizens to co-develop educational content, seasonal schools, and stakeholder workshops, linked to a systematic mapping of institutional competencies to inform a coherent, Europe-wide training offer.

ETHYC will strengthen ties with existing hydrogen initiatives, leverage regional hydrogen valleys, and develop curricula based on mapped capacities and validated through pilot seasonal schools. Throughout the ETN, meetings and workshops will explore the hydrogen value chain and current educational offerings. These activities will foster collaboration, exchange best practices, and engage stakeholders at local, European, and international levels—laying the foundation for a durable, interdisciplinary hydrogen education and training network.

The network will identify associate partners, funding pathways, and formalize a flexible Hydrogen course matrix. The consortium will contribute to the design of tailored educational pathways, enabling student secondments, widen the offer for hydrogen-related courses, and creating employment opportunities in the hydrogen sector. ETHYC ultimately aims to establish long-term collaboration, and, in due course, to design a postgraduate course with project members, in the form of a joint Erasmus Mundus programme or a Doctoral Network focused on the hydrogen ecosystem.

Personal highlight:
ETHYC brings together expert teams with world-class experience on hydrogen research and training. Currently, there is no EU-wide training programme at postgraduate level for hydrogen technologies. With the implementation of more hydrogen valleys funded by the EU, there is the need for skilled workers across the hydrogen supply chain. With ETHYC, we aim to design robust training programmes with the support of industrial stakeholders, to ensure that skilled researchers are brought into market.
