HATCH

HATCH aims to develop a joint lifelong learning micro-credential course focused on the ethical and effective use of humor as a communication tool in healthcare.

Category: Incubator Grant

University: Comenius University Bratislava, University of Galway, University of Göttingen, University of Groningen, Uppsala University
Period: 2025-2027

HATCH aims to develop a joint lifelong learning micro-credential course focused on the ethical and effective use of humor as a communication tool in healthcare. Developed collaboratively by five ENLIGHT universities and external partners, the course will integrate online learning with in-person workshops. Participants will explore the psychological, social and cultural dimensions of humor, learn to differentiate types of humor, and develop practical skills to apply humor responsibly across diverse healthcare contexts.

Professional medical clowns from Červený Nos Clowndoctors, Clowns Without Borders and Clowns on Call will lead experiential workshops, while the Teddy Bear Hospital initiative illustrates the role of humor in pediatric care. Academic experts from multiple disciplines will co-develop and deliver the online modules, ensuring interdisciplinary, evidence-based and practice-oriented content.

Delivered in two iterations in 2026 and 2027,  HATCH will also serve as a pilot micro-credential at Comenius University Bratislava. Collaborating with partner universities, the initiative will follow national approval guidelines and aim for local adaptations or recognition across various lifelong learning formats. A dedicated academic team from ENLIGHT partners will develop the course content and ensure alignment with European micro-credential standards. By integrating health and well-being with culture and creativity, the project advances ENLIGHT’s mission of innovative, interprofessional education that connects academic excellence with community-based practice.

The HATCH project is a close collaboration between academic experts and professional medical clowns, where research-based knowledge meets creative, experiential practice. This partnership transforms humor from a theoretical topic into a lived skill that participants can practice, reflect on and apply in real healthcare contexts. Seeing participants build confidence, empathy and connection through humor, while learning to use it ethically and sensitively, captures the unique value and impact of the project.
