Launching University of Galway
A new chapter in the history of Galway was opened on Thursday, September 1st, 2022 when National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) was renamed and rebranded University of Galway.
The Irish Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris T.D., officially launched University of Galway. Speaking at the launch event which took place on-campus, Minister Harris said that the rebranding as University of Galway delivers a very clear sense of ‘this magnificent institution’s place and identity’.
The rebrand will strengthen the university’s identity and emphasise its status to an international audience. Vice-President International and ENLIGHT Director, Professor Becky Whay, outlined “that the rebranding is aimed at building on the institution’s global reputation”.
President of the University of Galway, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh highlighted that the “University of Galway is rooted in the unique culture, communities, language and landscape of the west of Ireland and our research is focused on many of the World’s most pressing challenges, as framed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the ENLIGHT mission”.

University of Galway looks forward to continuing to work with ENLIGHT partners in transforming European Higher Education under its new identity.
