Legal Aid Studies (LAS) aims to foster social responsibility in future lawyers, raise awareness of societal inequalities, and cultivate interest in legal clinics and pro bono work. It combines challenge-based and research-based learning and collaboration with external partners.

The course was designed within an internationally-accredited programme Effective Teaching for Internationalisation and its impact on student learning has been documented in a scholarship of teaching and learning study. Over the past four years, 114 students have completed the course, with a diverse student body: 43 % home students and 57 % international, representing 19 countries.

This course is innovative in how it shapes students' professional values. In many professions, especially in law, individuals must rely on both expertise and ethics to make sound decisions. Yet such values are rarely explicitly addressed in university education. This course places professional values at the centre of learning, and data collected over the past four years reveal a positive shift in students’ attitudes and thinking
