HR Analytics
This course is presented by the University of Groningen.

HR Analytics is a master-level course (of approx. 60 students per year) that equips students to (a) translate organizational challenges into researchable questions, (b) identify and analyze data to address these questions, (c) engage stakeholders through data storytelling, and (d) drive evidence-based
decision-making in organizations. At the heart of the course is a project-based challenge built around a realistic organizational case (“Recovery Haven Network”) designed using synthesized real-world data to reflect actual HR challenges. Students take on the roles of HR analytics consultants working on a group project that is structured around the full HR Analytics life cycle—from formulating research questions to providing data-driven recommendations. Each week, course content aligns with a specific stage in this life cycle, allowing students to immediately apply what they learn to their projects. Alongside conceptual skills (asking the right questions) and technical training (in RStudio), students also receive guidance in data storytelling and visualization (in PowerBI), preparing them to communicate insights effectively to non-technical audiences.
The course concludes with the HR Analytics Symposium, where students present their findings to experienced HR professionals, whom we prepare to role-play as board of directors. This high-impact experience builds confidence, simulates organizational dynamics, and fosters valuable connections with practitioners. Highly transferable and built on open-source tools, the course is a model for interdisciplinary, practiceoriented teaching that enhances data literacy, employability, and collaboration across educational and professional contexts.
