We are very interested in collaborating with partners from the ENLIGHT network with a like-minded focus on promoting community engagement in mathematics and are looking forward to discussing how best to proceed with such initaitives.
We can already anticipate the value that would be added to this project, for example, by collaborators:
- Providing feedback on the Hidden Figures work that the student engages in during the internship including the partner’s local perspective.
- Creating a Hidden Figures hunt in their local area, sharing the hunt with the project partners, and providing feedback on the process

Figuring Out Y (FOY) is an initiative aimed at improving community engagement and education in STEAM with particular emphasis on mathematics through local environment application. The initiative has a number of distinct strands of focus aimed at raising awareness of mathematics in children’s literature and games, and pedagogic research. Activities in development include whole community-orientated Hidden Figures Hunt and the creation of a website to share community reviews of literature and games with some mathematical focus.
The vision for “Hidden Figures Hunt” is an event that engages families in a hunt for key items in their locality linked to mathematical and statistical concepts. The “Hidden Figures Hunt” will be designed with a generic foundation set of questions, which is then tailored to the locality by a local organisation team, consisting of FOY personnel working with 2nd level student volunteers, to tailor, promote and deploy in the locality.
We are requesting funds to support a student internship over Summer 2025 to work on developing a Hidden Figures hunt prototype as well as guidelines that can be used by others to create a Hidden Figures hunt for their area.
