ENLIGHT joint courses

Language for Environmental Future

About the course

Content

“Language for Environmental Futures (LEF)” is a 6-day Summer school open to postgraduate students (masters and PhD level) from all ENLIGHT universities. It is especially aimed at – but not restricted to – those studying translation, or globalization from a variety of perspectives (sociology, international relations, comparative literature). Speaking one or more language other than English is required for some activities, but no specific language or proficiency level is required.

LEF will provide an introduction to environmental humanities with a practical, hands-on approach using activities like:

  • Artist-led creative practices: e.g. map-making workshops, auto-fiction workshops. These have been developed in partnership with the Burren College of Art, an affiliated institution immersed in the Burren National Park;
  • Translation marathons where students will translate key texts linked to sustainability or climate change into target languages;
  • Transdisciplinary seminars including humanities/social sciences scholars in conversation with environmental scientists;
  • Short mentorship programs (“thesis clinics”) to advise students on their Master/PhD theses.

Learning outcomes

After the course, students will be able to:

  • develop and refine their understanding of how language policies can influence the discourse on climate change and sustainability. They will reflect on how current language use can maintain and reinforce existing inequalities, and devise ways of building new inclusive conversations about the environment.
  • familiarize themselves with creative and artistic techniques as a way of visualizing and reflecting on personal and political involvement with environmental themes.
  • develop translation and intercultural communication skills applied to the specific task of addressing environmental issues.
  • improve interdisciplinary and international connections with fellow postgraduate students
